The best place to stay in central Tucson. The house was beautiful as were the rooms. We stayed for several days and appreciated the proximity to the restaurants and shops on Fourth Avenue. We have stayed several times and each time is better than the last. Highly recommended.
I live in Tucson, so I don't need a place to stay -- but my conversation with the BBH's owner, Lea, was very enlightening. (I went to see what was the history behind this well-known landmark. It turns out that the BBH was owned by one of Lea's ancestors, something she didn't know at the time she and her partner purchased it.) The BBH restoration is remarkable, continuing even now as the last worn planks are pulled from the porch and replaced with new woods. This is by far and away one of Tucson's most remarkable inns, the result of over eight years of labor, comfortable without being stuffy, and with plenty of privacy. The problem facing BBH and other historical sites in Tucson is the city's decision to stake its future on importing children of the rich from elsewhere to study at the University of Arizona. This has required the rushed approval of zoning "overlays" that subject all neighborhoods, but especially those in protected settings near the University, to the threat of imposing multi-story structures housing that detract from the neighborhoods and subject them to increasing automobile traffic. I didn't perceive any immediate threat to BBH -- you can safely book without worry that it will affect your stay -- but it leaves owners like Lea pinned to their homes, whose real estate value is now fluctuating. It's a topic of general concern everywhere in Tucson. I found Lea to be a very conscientious and caring inn-keeper. I would agree with the other five-star postings. When friends and colleagues need a place to stay in Tucson, I will refer them to BBH without hesitation.
I intended to give this establishment a five star rating. I stayed here for a week in December 2013 following cardiac surgery. The facility was located close to the University of Arizona Medical Center where I was being followed by physicians. This Bed and Breakfast had a great location and the neighborhoods were good to stroll along in and purchase meals and relax (the advertised "free breakfast" was non-existent). After checking out and moving to a longer care facility, my wife received a bill from the woman who owns the "Big Blue House." I was accused of smoking in my room and they even sent a photograph of an aluminum soda can with several cigarettes on the rim. The problem is that as a cardiac patient, I do not smoke. The owner (who acted like a real snarky bitch after my visit) doesn't seem to want to accept my dismissal of her claim, nor my doctor's certification that I do not use nicotine products. I had no visitor's during my stay. I intended to promote this place, now I will dedicate my time to relating my experience with these scam artists to other travelers, medical professionals, patients, and business associates across the country. I have not paid the "smoking fine" that was issued to my billing address, nor will I ever. Nice job screwing up what had promised to be a stellar review. Greed and hopes of fast profits never pay, your actions have and will continue to cost you financially. The Big Blue House was well reviewed. Unfortunately, those were older reviews at the time. Maybe I should have read between the lines when the owner began badmouthing owning a historical building that was undergoing renovations in the City of Tucson. She confided in me that if she had the opportunity to do things again, her and her husband would not have opened the facility anywhere near Tucson. How I wish they could travel back in time and make that possibility a reality. I suppose that flying in from Seattle, the owner's assumed I was an easy scam that just unloaded $550 cash for one week in a room. Nope, I am a Tucson native and resident and my family history and presence in Pima County and Tucson preceeds the beginning of the American Civil War.
Thank you for showing your true colors, I will never have anyone stay with you because the guy complained and proved he was not a smoker and you chose to do nothing, shame on you
Fantastic location & beautiful facilities
