I have been living here with my wife for about 2 years now. The construction being very old, you cannot expect a very good living quality. One good thing is when you call Maintenance, they are responsive to your problem. Our initial 6 months of stay were OK until Brookchester allowed a renter in the apartment above us with a dog. I do not know how senseless some people be, the renter leaves her dog to run (or even dance probably??) on the wooden floor. The horrible sound at any random time of the day has irritated us at the brink of our patience. We have complained to Brookchester management regarding this many times but the management instruction does not seem to be effective enough for this renter as she seems to just ignore the fact that those sounds are pretty much intolerable for people staying beneath. One more point to note - in the lease agreement, it is written that 70% carpet is required for the upstairs apartment. Hearing the noises above our apartment, I really doubt whether there is 1% carpet laid on the floor by the renter. I was thinking how poor and non-thoughtful a community management can be to allow a renter with a big dog at upstairs apartment and also be ineffective to control the renter even after complaining many time about the irritating noise. I could not move out of this apartment because my job priority but now me and my wife have decided that we have had enough of it. We are going to move out of this apartment as soon as it would be feasible for us because no human being can stay inside the apartment like this. It has become a haunted unlivable apartment. I would discourage all my friends, colleagues and anyone seeking for a residence in New Milford to consider Brookchester apartment as an option. If you really want to take it because it is cheaper than any other nearby community, I would ask everyone to think and weigh between "A few bucks more" and "Peace of life".
Cheap place to live but that's about it. The management staff is terrible! Doreen is one of the most inept, incompetent people I've met. Cannot accomplish anything beyond her daily basic tasks. They WILL loose your rent check at some point, probably more than once, then try to blame you for it and send you a late notice! The rest of the staff does not know how to take initiative with any problem, they just shuffle paperwork and pass everything else off to Doreen, if she's even there. Otherwise they tell you to "try again tomorrow maybe". Maintenance is next to non-existent. My unit failed state inspection due to paint chipping in the shower. They fixed it 2-3 months later and in less than a year, the paint was chipping again and the sheetrock was bulging. If you call them outside of normal daily hours Monday through Friday, you will be diverted to some answering machine, and they'll tell you to basically call back again Monday to Friday during the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Speaking of the units themselves, the linoleum floors in the kitchen and bathroom, at least in my unit, were installed so poorly that they began shifting and lifting after 2-3 years. Multiple calls to maintenance were made, with no resolution. Heat is loud and is on full blast 24/7 from October to April. Parking is laughable. If you come home later than 7:00 PM forget about finding a spot. There is no order or organization to the parking, it's first come first serve and there are a lot of residents (especially Milford Estates) that do not go to work or even leave their apartments. The security staff are nothing but a couple of kids off the street. If you own multiple cars they will sticker your least used vehicle and leave nasty notes threatening eviction citing an "abandoned vehicle". You can call Doreen and she will of course do nothing about it. They will also ignore the busted, broken down cars in the lot with no license plates or inspection stickers. The laundry is overpriced, and they will hold your personal property hostage after 9:30 PM because in 2008 and 2009, the "security staff" allowed multiple instances of vandalism to occur in the laundry rooms, resulting in the Coinmach machines being emptied of money. Instead of installing better machines or enabling the laundry card entry system that is already installed, management simply shortened the laundry hours. Since allowing pets, there are dog droppings all over the sidewalks and grass. Nothing is done, even if you see the tenant responsible and report them to the office. Once again, Doreen does nothing. If you're looking for a cheap place to live, spend a few hundred bucks to hire a realtor to find you a private residence that is managed much better than Doreen manages this place!
Unless you really need cheap housing DO NOT RENT FROM HERE, but please forget about your deposit when you move out. They will deduct 1/3 of your deposit for the maintenance, even though if you maintain the house very clean. They will deduct all kind of charges from your deposit, so please be careful. The people here are so rude it's unbelievable. If you want to extend your lease for one month for moving out, they will collect $300 for extension charges. The floorboards in my apartment got so hot I had to have the windows open all winter. I asked them about this and never got an answer, never any fixes. It's small, cramped, and feels dirty even though we'd gotten a fixed up apt. No one did anything. I told them about it and nothing ever got done.
I have lived here for the past 3 years in an upstairs one bedroom apartment. This is a great place to live. I have a really nice apartment with beautiful hardwood floors. My neighbors are nice and I love the location; I can walk to the shopping center, banks and to the River Edge train station. The price is great for Bergen County.
The people here are so rude it's unbelievable. The floorboards in my apartment got so hot I had to have the windows open all winter. I asked them about this and never got an answer, never any fixes. There's shopping carts everywhere all the time. It's small, cramped, and feels dirty even though we'd gotten a fixed up apt. And forget about using their on premise laundry rooms. Half the time the doors are locked at random intervals and the other half of the time nothing works. Before I moved out, a woman had started living in her car with four or five cats right by the back window of my apartment. No one did anything. I told them about it and nothing ever got done. Unless you really need cheap housing DO NOT RENT FROM HERE.
