this was the most unprofessional experience of my life. after being approved to move in the leasing office became unreachable. after 4 days of unreturned phone calls, i was reached by email of all things, on a sunday. i made the office aware that not only was furniture on the way, but i needed all the contact information for the communications provider. never got it. on tuesday the 30th, i went to the leasing office to arrange for my furniture to be allowed to enter. this is where it gets interesting, after signing my lease electronically sunday, tuesday jessica tells me that i am not allowed to move in. why? because i have not provided a proof of income. this could have been avoided and provided had the leasing office answered their phone the previous week AND if jessica told me while we spoke on sunday and monday. this is not how someone is notified of imporant information. this was actually to be my first apartment and instead it is a learning experience as to how the rental world could be at its worst. i wonder what would happen if this had be a real emergency. my advice, go to the belmont at freemason. same price, nicer property, professional staff

I lived here for one year in a unit facing the inner courtyard. Decided to move because the surrounding neighborhood is sketchy (my bicycle's back wheel was stolen from inside the gated parking garage... Not totally surprising given all the men wandering by aimlessly at night) and we felt gypped paying $50 for parking a second car in the garage and $70/month on water. Water costs are divided between all residents evenly regardless of individual usage. Other minor issues: lots of dog poop (even inside the garage! Perhaps because they don't provide doggy bags on the lawns), dirty corridors, thin walls (always heard my neighbors morning alarm), fire alarm went off several times once requiring us to evacuate at 4am, noisy train at night, towing cars in the garage for not having the parking placard displayed. The one thing I did really like is the nice 24hr gym (2 ellipticals, 2 treadmills, 2 bikes, a few machines and free weights). The pool is nice too but I actually never used it much, it's closed most of the year. We moved to Belmont at Freemason- same price in a much nicer neighborhood, plus granite countertops and lots of fun freebies like 3 months at the YMCA across the street and free tickets to events like winefest. We also got a deal for two months free rent which made it irresistible. Overall, Alexander at Ghent isn't bad, but there are safer apts for the same price downtown and cheaper apts that are just as nice in the same area (ie Ghent Village), so I don't recommend it.

We had a two bedroom on the first floor facing the street. We had a lot of foot traffic by our windows, singing, drunk yelling at 3am, paint balling, dogs barking, car alarms, school sports across the street, everything. But first floor has nice tall ceilings and a balcony, where you can drop off your groceries, very convenient. We liked the proximity to downtown and all ghent stuff, Harris Teeters is a short walk away, apartment had plenty of natural light. You get one garage spot, which was not close, street parking was a pain sometimes. Gym is not huge but sufficient, it's often packed after work, a big gym is also across the street. We loved the pool with Sinatra and Buble mix, we tried to go during the week, on weekends families with bunch of kids sort of took over the pool. You can borrow dvds from the club house. Maintenance team is awesome. Everybody did a great job, especially the manager, Rick. I am grateful for his hard work helping load some heavy furniture items for me WAY after hours, when my husband was out of town. You can leave your packages at the front desk for UPS or FedEx pick up. I got to know UPS guys and their schedule, they were always extra accommodating. Club house is nice with wine socials and other activities. Fire alarms went off sometimes, even in the middle of the night, people had to go outside every time with their pets; once there was a dead body carried out, we were told it was an "isolated case". Never a dull moment. In case of flood, there's an overflow parking on the roof to get your car off the street. The walls are crap, we're both musicians, our neighbors complained about loud music and singing a few times, so we had to stop playing at home. I had a suspicious man force his way into my car as I was getting in and told me to drive to the bank to get money from my account to give to him. That's at noon, and just so happened that nobody was around, so I remained calm and respectful (for all I know he could have had a gun on him), I said ok, but I need to verify this with my husband, quickly called him, you can imagine my husband's horror when he heard me arguing with a man in my car, started calling the police, this scared the guy and he left, spread bunch of mud on my windshield. So if you're a young, attractive female, just be careful at any time of day. Overall, our experience was positive, now I miss all of the action, every place has pluses and minuses, it's life.
