The inconvenience is ridiculous they have major plumbing issue because most of the time they put a letter in your door after hours saying the water will be turned off. There are a lot of tenants moving out and the new tenants are younger and like hangout outside at night drinking etc im looking to move been here 2 years its time to go....plus now you have to pay water gas garbage pick up
I lived there from 2005 to 2014. I saw it become a project. I had no other place to go because we could not afford to move. People are robbed in the parking lots. Clothes stolen out of the laundry rooms. There is no security, so you renting at your own risk. Your car is subject to be damaged by other tenants and their visitors backing into them or denting them when they open their cars. Southgate takes no responsibility. I lived there for nine years and the normal wear and tear of an apartment, Southgate deducted it from my security deposit to fix it for the next tenant (with my money). No interests was ever applied to the security deposit that grew in interests and Southgate kept the money. Take my advice DO NOT RENT HERE! You will be sorry after five months because you wasted your money and time! The floors and walls are thin. You hear people walking and having sex in the bedrooms above you and next to you.
When I first moved into Southgate, it was 1988. It was VERY nice then. I felt like I lived in a hotel. Over the years, Southgate sold this property, hired people in the office who would go so far as to embezzle tennants rent money, they stop keeping up with the property through basic maintence, and last but not least, they allowed SECTION 8 low income people move in. When I moved out of Southgate in 2006, it was a slum. Two words for you. Cabrini Green. It may look inticing, but trust me, when you get in there, you will regret it as soon as the ink dries on your lease. The elevators constantly break down, there are robberies (Some by Southgate's maintenence men) there are drug deals going down all around along with other shady characters, and the list goes on.. Consider this a warning. If you see a positive review about this property, its probably b/c that person hasn't lived there long enough to fully understand what's going on, or either they are one of the section 8 people that just don't know better. Please DON'T MOVE HERE!
To start the place is huge. It is definitely the biggest place you will find for the price you pay. Although, with that comes a lot of negatives. The girls in the office were very lazy, the assistant property manager, Mildred, was the only exception to this. To prove how lazy they really were, we were told our credit check would be done within 48 hours. 2 weeks later we were approved after a big ordeal. Apparently, they didn't even start to run it until a week later. We had to have Mildred get involved before anything was done, and she was able to get it all taken care of within a matter of a few hours. Unfortunately we could not give her the credit for the commission because she is a property manager. The only reason we needed her help was because no one else would help us when we were trying to move in. "Something" always came up for the girl we were originally dealing with and she was ALWAYS late or had some excuse as to why she could not be there. When we went to sign the lease she didn't complete ANY of our paper work and wasn't at the appointment time we agreed upon and Mildred had to do everything even though she was the ONLY person in the office. Before we moved in, the website said we would have dishwashers, hardwood floor, garbage disposal, and a lot of other things. They intentionally forgot to mention was that this was only in their upgraded units which, we were told by staff, are NEVER available. Makes us wonder if these even exist. Oh yes! and the big pool--- they advertise this very nice pool with very nice pictures. It is now the beginning of June and the water is just as disgusting as it was when we first moved in here in February. There are no signs of improvement. If your wondering why this matters, it's the beginning of June and we have already had 90+ degrees, and the pool would have been great. When we first moved in, we made a list of complaints about the apartment that needed to be fixed and were told that they would be fixed in a week or so... We are still waiting for this to happen. Our ac unit is a piece of garbage. It will only cool the living room, which is where its placed. The problem with this is we live on the 4th floor and it becomes VERY hot in the bedroom. There is absolutely no way to pull the air from the living room into the bedroom. When we first moved in the ac unit had a garbage bag over the front of it, with a missing faceplate. We were told it would be replaced in may and we are still waiting for that to happen as well. Not only is it an eyesore, it is dangerous. We had a problem after we moved in with one of the neighbors being very very loud but they did stop after the complaint. We're only curious if they were fined for smoking in their non smoking apartments/hall, after the smoke had traveled into our apartment. The emergency maintenance guy is lazy and does not answer his phone. When we called him 4 times in one night he never picked up. We left a message and he decided to return the call about 16 hours later. Thank God it wasn't a water or gas leak. The laundry room has 4 washers and 4 dryers on the first floor. Since we moved in we have had 2 "out of order" dryers that never seem to be fixed. (I believe I saw the repairman here this morning but who knows if he did anything.) If you're not in the parking lot by at least 9pm, good luck finding parking near the complex. They claim they tow vehicles that have not been moved in 5 days, but there has been a jeep here that has a compilation of tickets and it has not moved since we have been here. We also called 2 months ago to ask about moving up to a 2 bedroom apartment and they said that we could and that they would let us know in 2 weeks of an open unit. They just got back to us yesterday. And last but not least, all of our neighbors seem to keep to themselves, but it seems to be a low income apartment and we have seen some pretty shady people here and they let anyone walk straight into the building. Like I said, you get what you pay for.
Southgate is ant infested!!! Broken elevators, washing machines and dryers!! They let anybody move in! the halls smell of garbage!! The management and maintenance do not care!!! Stay away the advertisement is a lie!!! My real rating is a ZERO!!! Stay Away If You Know What Is Good For You!!!
