The door person who worked on Sunday, May 1, 2016, around 3:30 p.m. was extremely rude and hostile. We had parked our car in the attached ramp for the weekend because we were misled into thinking it was the parking area for the Best Western next store (that's a whole other story). When we went on Sunday to retrieve our car, my son and husband (who recently had shoulder surgery and was lugging around a huge sling) sat down in the lobby only to have the door man tell us that sitting in the lobby was akin to sitting in the person's living room. When we told him we were parked in the garage and were trying to decide if we should get our car or walk some more. He told us we should know where we are going and to get out. NOTE: This lobby is the only way to access the parking garage that we knew. When my husband asked to speak with a manager, the very hostile door man said "No". When my husband asked for his name he said "None of your business". Then when we spoke with the parking attendant, he told us that the luxury suites and the parking garage were not affiliated so he could not help. Really?!? When you share the same entry way????? He could not take our complaint and pass it along?
I have been living at 1130 S. Michigan since January 2015, and I love it here! The location is pretty amazing. It is right in the heart of the Loop, and is surrounded by pretty much anything you could need. Jewell Osco and Trader Joe's are right next door. Target and Best Buy are both pretty close by. There is a good selection of restaurants near by. I go to Columbia College, and most of my classes are not even more than a few blocks away, which is perfect. It is right next to the Roosevelt El stop with access to the red, orange, and green lines, and it's also next to bus stops for several different lines, so if you do need to get out of the Loop, travel is very easy. The apartment itself is nice. I live in a studio, and it is not one of the upgraded ones, so it's nothing too special, but I am very happy with everything here. While the upgraded look would be nice, the two things I really wish I had were a dishwasher and an in unit washer and dryer, but that's extremely rare for a studio, so it's not like I am really missing out on those. The utilities package includes the Heat, AC, Cable, and Wi-fi Internet, so I don't have to worry about a bunch of utility bills. I really haven't had too many problems in the ways of maintenance, but whenever I do have anything that needs to be fixed, the maintenance people are very quick to respond and take care of the issue right away. The amenities are really nice here, as well. There is a 24 hour door person, and the staff hired are always helpful and friendly. There is a package receiving room and a dry cleaning service. There is a gym that is open 24/7, and while it is lacking a few things, most notably a bar for the bench, and free weights over 50 lbs, it is a very solid gym, and enough that I don't have to spring for a gym membership somewhere else. There are several cardio machines - ellipticals, bikes, and treadmills. There are several upper and lower body machines. There are a solid amount of free weights and barbells. There is an open area for aerobics or yoga - and they have free classes of yoga and aerobics a couple of nights a week, too. There is also a great lounge room. It has a couple of huge flat screens, a pool table, and a shuffle board table. It can be rented out for private parties, and the management office actually throws great parties in there, too, which are free to the residents. The building is pet friendly, which is nice because even though I don't own a pet, I still get to see all the dogs coming and going! There is a doggy deck for those that do have pets, which I imagine is nice to not have to go far to let your little pal use the bathroom. The best amenity, though, might be the sun deck! There is a pool, grills, and cabanas, and all of this overlooks Grant Park. It is only open late spring through early fall, but when it is open, you can't beat it on a nice sunny day! Overall, I am glad I moved here when I first came to Chicago, and as of now, I have no plans to move out!
Twelve months ago, my wife & I were moving 500 miles to Chicago to experience a different type of lifestyle. We had a lot of criteria for our future apartment, and we luckily came across 1130 S Michigan. I'm not going to lie. The OLD reviews of this place weren't all that good so it made us a bit skeptical at first. I'm happy to say none of those have shown to be true. This place is ridiculously well priced, and a majority of the rooms have a great view too. There's a wonderful 24/7 exercise room, and the best part of everything is that there's a dog deck. That's HUGE for us dog lovers, especially in the winter. The only downside is most of the apartments don't have a washer/dryer hookups - just a central washer & dryer room on the mezzanine floor. It's not that bad. You can't get EVERYTHING you want in an apartment so you learn to deal with it. Due to their fantastic referral program, we have 2 friends, after finding out the size/price of the apartments, already looking to move in to this place. It's really helpful that it's only 2 blocks from the train too! Maintenance has been solid for us, and the staff is really nice. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
My wife and I have been here for about a year, and we couldn't be more pleased. The Y-shaped building allows for some truly amazing views -- our unit's are particularly spectacular (>180 panorama in our living room, full view of the skyline as well as Lake Michigan, see the summer fireworks perfectly, etc). The location is pretty awesome too. It's next door to Grant Park & Trader Joe's, near several more grocery stores and a Target, a block from the L, and a quick walk to most office buildings in the loop. We've had good experiences with management and staff too -- maintenance requests are met quickly, emailed questions are answered quickly, and the doormen are excellent. I hope we can stay for a long time.
Ok, same problem with the bait and switch on the rent - suddenly concession is gone and the rent popped very high. But that aside, this is a great place to live. Beautiful views, quiet, I NEVER hear noise, amenities being improved as we speak, great management, resident parties twice a year. Convenient to shopping, el, everything, but not in the middle of it. The management staff has been unfailingly polite, considerate and willing to do what is right. Maintenance staff is stellar - they usually respond to a complaint within the hour. Door staff is great, they make you feel recognized and welcomed. I love it here, hope I can stay a long time.
