Well known for its elegant appointments, The Hillcrest was a destination not just for the many authors, artists, and business people who frequently visited, but also for celebrities. In 1933 Amelia Earhart visited the hotel, and as part of her campaign to assist pilots in locating the local airfield, painted a huge arrow on the roof.
