I recently moved from NC to Topeka. I unexpectedly had to find a place to live in on very short notice. Because of the 19 hour drive and unfortunate timeline, I ended up renting a 2 bed, 1 bath apartment that was one of Chalet's "Daily Deals". I now suspect that the "daily deals" are apartments that have a multitude of issues and that are difficult to rent other than on really short notice. Cost: Deposit: $400.00 Pet Deposit: $250.00 App Fee: $27.00 Rent: $715.00 PROS: they have a lot of little amenities that you can use, such as DVD's to rent or borrow, (not sure if there is a cost), coffee, weekly free cookie, some kind of apartment get together type stuff. Another PRO is that it is right across the street from Gage Park. CONS: When I looked at the apartment, they had the windows open and a candle burning...in the future I will view this as a sign of trouble, this apartment REEKS of cigarette smoke. It's in my hair, in my clothes, and will eventually stink up my furniture. I think Patty and Selma from the Simpsons must have lived here before, or a chain smoking shut in. The BATHROOM even reeks of smoke. The windows are really old, there is ugly wallpaper that is peeling, the appliances are ancient (my stove was very poorly cleaned there is caked on gunk along the sides of the stove . I pointed this out to Jennifer during the "walk through" and she said that they don't charge the tenents for things like the partially dirty stove...we'll see) and will probably cost me a forture in electricity. The buildings are so old and rickety you can hear EVERYTHING from the neighbors, cars, etc. Did I mention the cigarette smell? ;) The carpeting is this unbelievable deep pile shag carpeting that is now brown, (with a large "browner" stain), but that may be ingrained cigarette smoke. The second day I was here, I asked Jennifer, from the Chalet office, via an email if they had a carpet cleaner that I could use, and she emailed back that I could go to Dillons and get one myself! The windows are so old they rattle in the wind. the setup of the apartments is also pretty bad. On the second floor, there is a common walk way, like a cheap motel has, that everyone walks to there apartment on. This means that your living room and one of the bedrooms has a window that people are walking past all day. They advertise that they are "pet friendly" but I have two dogs and they only allow you to walk them on three little strips of land and one of those is right along 6th Ave. I don't want my dogs three feet from cars whizzing by. I had to contact the maintenence staff because I had a sink that wouldn't drain and a toilet that was leaking. To the credit of the maintenence staff they were prompt and fixed both items. the upshot is that this apartment is way overpriced and has no real amenities. If you are concerned about cleanliness, decent appliances and carpeting then this is not the place for you. If a free cookie is high on your list, contact Chalet immediately!

This place offers reasonably priced rooms online and in their brochure, but you will not find any apartments less than 500$ and they are very small. They offer lower priced rooms initially, and then after a year of living there, they boost your rent 100 a month. Very sketchy business practices, and it is no wonder that they are only half full now. Trying to squeeze water from a turnip.

Employees inside the complex are RUDE. Overpriced apartments, and amenities. You can find better.
