The place is a dump. They don't clean the apartments before you move in, my floors were filthy. It's ludicrously expensive, and for the price you pay you get construction noise in the morning, not to mention the DART rail, and bar noise at night. The loudest apartment I've ever been in. On top of that the fridge is busted, the shower curtain was torn off the wall when we moved in, and the lights flicker anytime the train goes by (basically every fifteen minutes). All this, plus every frat daddy student SMU has to offer, can be yours if you move into the Shelby. But wait, there's more! It's more or less the most difficult process imaginable to move in, as your options are parking in front of a bar and blocking traffic or going into a tiny back alley and then carrying whatever you offload through the parking deck to the elevator. Don't count on your trip being easy though, because the elevator is broken more often than it's working. I'm in hell.
I at first really hated this place. I was planning on leaving but the management started to clean up the place, getting rid of a lot of nuances and hired a very hard working cleaning staff. Pretty good location , Occasionally the bar across the street gets too loud. But other than that its a nice place to live.
I love living here!!! I just moved in 2 weeks ago and I already feel at home. This is my first apartment and the staff has been amazing with helping me with any questions I might have or any maintenance issues. The apartments are beautiful and everything looks and feels brand new, as if I am the first person to live in my apartment. The terrace is the best part of living here! Myself and a few of my neighbor-friends have had a couple of cookouts out there. It has been a great way to meet some more of my neighbors and make new friends while enjoying the gorgeous view of the Downtown. Out of all of the other apartments I visited near SMU, this was my favorite and so far I am very happy with my choice! Loves it!
The Shelby seems like a totally legit place for an SMU student: it's new, it's high-end, and it's expensive. But that's not saying much. Like that other reviewer said, you'll be up ALL THE FREAKIN TIME!! If your apartment is facing the west side, you're stuck with the DART rail passing every 3 minutes. If you're on the east side, you hear dogs barking 20 hours a day thanks to that vet clinic next door. If you have a balcony facing the south side, you're stuck listening to fellow SMU students being SMU students at Barley House. That's cool and all, but what about when you actually WANT peace and quiet!?! If you want a typical high-end SMU experience, live north or west of campus or somewhere in Uptown, which is pretty much our territory anyways.
the place had potential, we moved in when the building first opened and have watched as bad management has allowed the building devolve into a dump. High rents and no cleaning of common areas, a restaurant that stores it's supplies and garbage in fire exits and student tenants that are irresponsible animal house like fools make the shelby an expensive and poor choice for living. Look elsewhere for better alternatives to an apartment near SMU
