Shockoe Bottom runs along side of the James River and the Kanawha Canal which means that it also runs along side of the flood wall creating some interesting architectural elements.
The Virginia Capital Trail is a 55-mile long, dedicated multi-use trail connecting Richmond and Williamsburg along the historic and beautiful Rt. 5 corridor. Part of it runs through Shockoe Bottom and provides a perfect spot for walking, biking, running and/or jogging.
This iconic place is the centerpiece of the Museum District. The VMFA, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, was recently completely refurbished and expanded, was one of just a handful of museums worldwide to host Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris in 2011, always has free general admission and offers a variety of classes for children and adults. In addition the museum has a cafe and a restaurant on site and park like grounds with outdoor sculptures and benches.
