Short version: poor customer service but nice facility. Long version: My fiancé and I were looking for our first apartment and were pleased to find Deveraux Glen (DG). They have the layout we wanted, it was spacious and reasonably priced. It just so happened they had a tenant give ~4 months notice a day or so before we toured DG. This meant the available room hadn't been posted and we were the first to hear about it. We saw this as a great opportunity since the availability lined up nicely with when our leases ended so we went through the application process, were approved, paid the security deposit and were emailed the online lease to sign. My lawyer-in-training fiancé poured through the agreement and came up with a few general questions to have clarified. We got the answers we were looking for but also received a phone call from the DG office staff asking us to call back. I called back to be told the tenants of the room we put the deposit on decided to pay the severance fee and move out early. DG told me they couldn't hold the room for a couple months for us so they were going to refund our security deposit and allow us to reapply for free (meaning they wouldn't charge us the application fee again). I understand their business depends on as few vacancies as possible but this didn't seem like the right way to treat a prospective customer. Not to mention, I didn't realize the security deposit was a one-sided "contract." They were able to refund it but had I changed my mind I doubt I would have been given the deposit back. I asked to speak with the manager who was very polite in confirming what I had already been told and who reassured me that their staff would work to find me a replacement because I was "at the top of the list" (never heard back). This experience put a sour taste in my mouth so I decided I didn't want to give them my business. I called back to see when I could expect the security deposit to be refunded and was told they have 30 days from when they said it would be refunded to mail me a check. I received the check and found a different apartment to rent from.
The parking is horrible! beyond imagination! and some of the staff are rude.
If there was a "0" star, I would've given it. Before I get into the negatives, let me say a couple of positive things about Deveraux Glen. 1) Location. If you work in the suburbs (Beaverton, Hillsborough), it's conveniently located between work and the city. 2) I lived in two units and have seen a lot of their layouts... most units have good design. Good use of space. It's also great that they have an in-unit laundry. I can say A LOT of negatives about DG--parking, crowded pool, paper thin walls (seriously, you can hear your neighbors do anything!). But none of these really bothered me much...mostly because I already knew about these because I had a buddy who lived there before I moved in (I also resigned a lease, so at least for the 2nd one, I had prior experience). So I'm going to focus on what bothered me the most about DG, the apartment staff, both at the property and corporate. They're VERY dishonest and will try to fleece you for every penny they can when you move out. I'll give you two examples. When I moved-in, I saw what looked like a cough syrup stain in the bathroom. It was pretty hard to miss it--it was in the middle of the bathroom. I told the guy who did the walk through if they could clean it up. He said they tried but couldn't get rid of it. He then said he'll make a note of it on my file. Fast forward to post-move out, I get a bill for a clean up. I thought it was a mistake so I called them...they told me they didn't see anything on my file so I have to pay. Are you kidding me? It gets better. When I extended my lease, they gave me a free carpet cleaning. I didn't need it at the time so I asked them if I could use it for when I move out (everyone knows apartments overcharge for this during move out). They said it was okay. Fast forward to move out, what do I get? You guessed it, a bill for carpet cleaning? When I asked why I was charged, the corporate office told me they need to see a note from the DG saying I could use the cleaning for move out. I told them it's on my file; I've seen it multiple time in person! They keep giving me excuse after excuse. They thought I'd complain a little and then just hand them the money. Wrong. It's a matter of principle. I cannot pay for something I wasn't responsible for. Bottom line, they will clean your wallet during move out. If you're considering Deveraux Glen as an individual renter or as a relocation agency for corporate apartments, please don't use them. As consumers we vote with our wallets. That's how we make a point about what is or is not a good customer experience. Thanks.
The apartments are nice enough but management is terrible, and parking is a pain - to say the least. We were charged for the smallest things when we moved out. We had only lived in this complex for 5 months as we looked for a home to buy. There was absolutely no damage done to anything in the apartment in the limited time we were there. When handing in our keys they neglected to ask us for our parking passes back - then charged us $50 for them even though we mailed them to the office! If you absolutely must stay here, do NOT pay a deposit and sign as short of a lease as possible. STAY AWAY!
I have lived at Deveraux Glen for 2 years and I love it here! The community is friendly, clean and my specific apartment has a wonderful view! If I have a problem with anything maintenance related, I can call a hotline and I am always called back in a timely manner. The fixtures in the apartment are nice and fairly new. The grounds are always expertly maintained and attended to by a group of respectful workers. I work from home and having a view of the wetlands is wonderful. I enjoy the leasing staff at Deveraux Glen and the ease of dropping my rent check in a manager’s box or paying online is very convenient. I have read some negative comments about parking and I have never had a problem with parking as I have a carport, which is assigned parking. I know they also have garages from rent as well. Please reconsider renting here. It's close to downtown Portland ( 6 mins.)walking distance from shopping and Sunset Transit! I love living here!!!
