Save yourself the money. DO NOT live here. I currently live here and can not wait till my lease is up. Loud dirty neighbors...found a used condom In front of my door (the wind had blown it)and the wrapper in the bushes. the apartments are runned down quiet a bit to be paying $600+ for. The people who clean between each tenant half ass it. There were socks behind the washer/dryer from the previous tenant! The window frames are old and in need of repair the winter is horrible with the bedrooms being freezing cold! In the spring and summer weather you can't open them because the screens are pulled away. Oh but to turn on the heat or ac, I would have to sell my kidney. Our first electricity bill was $170. When we were barely home between work and school. We called KCP&L and they explained that we pay for our own electricity but also get charged for what the building actually uses. The walls are very thin and the floor boards squeak when someone is walking. We literally hear everything! Management can be very rude, and the maintenance guy seems like he hates his job but loves driving around staring at people in his brand new suv. Over night security is a joke, you see them maybe once or twice a week. Our counter top was cracked and so are most of the cabinet doors, the shielfs in the pantry are wobbly. First night I tried using the sink it leaked, the shower head leaks, Please save yourself hundreds. This place is not worth it.
I moved in over a year ago and it's basically been a nightmare the whole time. I will say that I haven't had roaches yet, which is fabulous. But the management is ridiculous and the person that cleans the apartments in between each tenant is a joke. They have steam cleaned the carpets numerous times and there is still cat hair from the last person that lives here. I do not own a cat because I am painfully allergic. To this day I still get cat hair up when vacuuming. The energy bill is astronomical if you want to keep the place comfortable, also had to buy a dehumidifier because it gets to humid in the summer which makes the apartment reek. When I moved in the refrigerator was broken and leaking which took three calls to get them to fix/replace it, the dish washer didn't clean anything and that took several calls to get fixed When I wanted to shower, water would come out the top shower head and faucet at the same time which did get fixed. Then I had mold growing on all the air vents, they replaced one and spray Clorox on others. Like how is that a fix?! They should be so concerned that a vent is growing mold. And just as a side note for all of this, the guy that fixes this stuff acted like that's just how things are for most of these when in actuality these things were broken. Just because I'm a woman living alone doesn't mean that I'm ignorant to how appliances should run, and what should or shouldn't be in the air. I felt that was the most disrespectful and dehumanizing part of this living experience. So Retreat of Shawnee, I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your souls.
I am going to try and give as thorough review as i can to clear up question and issues .. Been here since 2014 thru the management change and we have found the retreat a nice place to call home. Is it perfect? No. Are there better places? Yes. But for the price you pay in the location your in it is a pretty good deal for JoCo. The elementary school just rebuilt to an amazing 2 story school within walking distance and my kids are loving it. Very nice school with great teachers. The apartments are on the smaller side but the floor plan makes it functional. And if you need storage space this is not the apartment for you. We have had a few things needing to be fixed and maintenance is AMAZING! I don't know what other people are talking about. Maintenance has been above and beyond and got the jobs done same day and done right every single time. A + to maintenance. A + to keeping the grounds clean. They have really cracked down on those who leave trash out/cig butts ect... And finding an apartment that has a washer/dryer IN your apartment in JoCo that's affordable is like impossible so major perk there. Some have complained about roaches...yes..some buildings have had issues. But they do have an exterminator come once a month and spray. When we first moved in there was a problem with them and after talking to neighbors we came to find it was due to who lived in our apartment before us. They were evicted and for good reason. I did have to have the cleaning person come back through and re clean before we moved our things in due to dead and living roaches everywhere as well as dust and roach feces all over vents and surfaces. (i will add i do agree changing cleaning crew would be advised they lack efficiency and attention to detail) we also have a reoccurring mold issue around the windows that i spray bleach on. The windows need replacing as they cause alot of leakage and higher electric costs. (ours isnt soo bad though ranges 100-160 in 2nd floor 2 bed) summertime is THE WORST! utilize your ceiling fans and pray you stay cool. Maybe its just where our apt is but it is like an inferno ALL THE TIME. Alllllll the time. But lets get back to positives....our neighbors are mostly great all around us. Had a few issues with noise from one and management got right on it. The new management really is on point and trying to clean up the last managements mistakes. As with all management changes it takes time for issues to be fully resolved. Like unruly tenants (haven't seen one in awhile but noise is still a slight issue walls are thin but like i stated we are lucky with our neighbors), and run down apartments (they are still in the middle of an extensive update) our stove could seriously use replacing as ive told them a couple times i can only use 1 burner since we moved in but thats honestly the only issue ive had with maintenance and i think they are just waiting for us to move so they can replace the stove. Who knows. Im sure if i nagged enough they would replace it but so far i just live with it so i dont have to deal with the hell of replacing it on the 2nd floor. Just seems like it would suck for everyone. Cable and internet...time warner or at&t ...pick your poison. MANY of us wish they would just bite the bullet and get Google Fiber. Why they haven't yet i don't know. The pool and hot tubs are allways kept clean and major perk to it being open all year round! Love it! Fitness area could be bigger but at least there is one. Anywho.....we are getting ready to spend our 3rd year here and if your looking for a decent affordable place in a good location to highways and shopping with laundry in apt, year round pool retreat is a good choice. Oh and yes water is a set rate but it depends on different factors what your rate is when you move in. And its set. No shared bill you have to hunt down yadayada. We really are fairly happy here.
The staff in the office are so friendly! The pool was so fun,big and clean! But the apartments are not worth it. The floors squeak when we walk and we can hear EVERYTHING and when I say everything I'm not over exaggerating! Phones ringing, people talking. We are always getting woken up late at night on a school and work night! Our neighbors are so loud On all floors 1st 2nd and the third floor!!!! We also found roaches in our apartment. We were so happy moving in but now even happier to move out!
Can't imagine what these other people are going on about. Maybe the building I'm living in has a better quality of people. I've been here since Dec 2012 and only had problems when some loud neighbors and their friends would play music and then sit on everyone's cars including mine. My car isn't your chair!!! Seems management has been cracking down on these types of people as it's been awhile. The only cons I see to living here are choices of Internet as management has a wait and see attitude about Google fiber, and Kansas City itself as it's very difficult to find and/or keep a job that doesn't get rid of you after a few months. The pros (if you want to call them that) are a stackable washer/dryer, convenience to the highway to work in Overland Park or downtown Kansas City (if you can find a job!), maintenance men are good about fixing things, and even tried putting in more insulation around the a/c unit in the closet as it faces the north and gets extremely cold in the winter time.
