Food was OK. Small plates that seem to require less craft were better than the Tablas that were really poorly developed. The meat tabla had average quality beef and the side sauces were lazy choices. While some waiters have manners others are arrogant, impatient and you can tell they give a damn about what you want. The manager, a short guy that seems to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown (so not latin), was falsely eager to be helpful. Quickly when there was a confusion with a payment he was rude and became agitated. Maybe he should go work somewhere else. Remembers - customers are PAYING YOU. Bar tenders and hostess were much better at everything they were doing. I went twice and I am not going back...
La Pulperia is a fantastic restaurant featuring a beautiful mixture of ingredients and flavors. The wait staff are all very attentive and knowledgable, while the bartenders are like scientists behind a magnificent slab of stone. The food at this restaurant is made with love.
Waitress and host were very accommodating and polite. They took off the ceviche (food was awful, as noted below), which was very kind. They def get one star for service. One star for ambiance. Lighting, music and brick interior give it a cozy yet fun feel. Yet, on a Friday night, not very packed and we know why... Food, drink and cost - no stars. Drinks - had two margaritas that were too sweet. Food was just plain awful. Guacamole, I think, had some sour cream. The ceviche mixto was not really ceviche, rather a seafood salsa that had little flavor, was oily and fishy. We ordered the salmon and octopus plates. Salmon was just "ok". The octopus was way too overcooked, giving that perpetual chew. The five sides that it came with were terrible (chimichurri was too oily and not enough vinegar, cauliflower was too spicy and sweet - again not enough vinegar, the eggplant was undercooked and cold that lacked any flavor, the gratin had a pool of oil that led it to not be eaten, and the broccoli rabe was overcooked and soggy). Although they took off the ceviche salsa, it was still expensive for the price. Living in NYC for 6 years, I am accustomed to costly meals, but the quality of food does not warrant the price. Bottom line, stay away until the food turns around
Ive come here a couple times for lunch. I had the steak and eggs and I enjoyed it both times. My parents did not like their dish but the manager made every effort to correct the order. I can respect that.
What we love about coming here is the intimate feel coupled with authentic-- yet unique-- dishes. If you're lucky enough to meet the owner, you'll find that he's lovely, and the staff are likewise personable and attentive. It's a fantastic place for date night or a celebration. Highly recommend!
