The Fair Oaks West Apartments are a massive complex with 760 units across 12 buildings. One of the advantages of a large complex like this is its investment in its amenities, which is definitely the high point for Fair Oaks. They have community events almost daily including exercise and cooking classes. On top of that they have: 3 pools, one particularly large one that’s heated year round and has swimming lanes, a nice but not spectacular apartment gym, four lit tennis courts, a ping pong cabana, billiards hall, movie theater, a community center with free wifi, and even free brunch every other Sunday.
The apartments themselves are a little disappointing. The complex was built in 1973 and shows its age immediately with the antiquated elevator. The apartments are lacking in closet space (apparently people didn’t have as much stuff forty years ago). They try to compensate by allocating extra storage space on each level, but it’s only the size of one luggage/apartment so clearly insufficient. The shared hallways are dimly lit, many smell strongly of curry, and the carpets are worn, resembling a motel. There have been two renovations with the primary change being the style of cabinetry. One unique benefit they offer is a willingness to paint the interior walls a color other than white (including a light blue, orange, and brown) by request. Two bedroom floor plans have central A/C and one bedroom floor plans on the third floor do as well. All have heating. Laundry is shared and available on each floor. All units come with 1 parking spot and all extras are first come first serve but don’t fill up.
The location is good. Fair Oaks West is right around the corner from El Camino, meaning you avoid the noise and traffic of being right on it but get the benefit of the close proximity of the many shops and restaurants there.
Deposits for Fair Oaks is $600, but they do offer it for half price for employees of a few large, local companies (such as Apple and Google). They also offer specials (a few hundred dollars off 1st month’s rent) for putting down a deposit on the same day as a tour. The application fee is $33/person.
