Problems by Kathleen Patricia Odenthal
Crime in Port Morris
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: Violent crime is still a problem in #PortMorris despite crime declines versus their peaks during the heroin and crack epidemics. Massive low income public housing developments line the north side of the Major Deegan Expressway. The Mott Haven area to the west is notorious for its drug trade and violent crime. Port Morris is very industrial and desolate. The area is patrolled by the 40th Precinct located at 257 Alexander Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.
Abandoned Buildings
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: #TheHeights district of Jersey City is broken up into a fairly plain and easy to follow grid. Houses and residential areas fill almost 90% of the town with the exception of three main roads that all run parallel to each other, Palisade Avenue, JFK Boulevard and Central Avenue. Besides from the residential homes and the shopping district, you can also find a wealth of abandoned buildings, graffiti and decay.
La Casa della Bomboniera & Il Telaio
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: What once was a long established gift store has now moved to Staten Island, showing the economic downfall of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The store moved in 2005 after economic struggles after decades of services to the Brooklyn community. La Casa della Bomboniera & Il Telaio was launched in the #Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn in 1970.
Bronx Grit Chamber
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: The Bronx Grit Chamber, located in #PortMorris is a primary component of the Ward's Island Sewage Treatment Works, New York City's first major project to alleviate the pollution of the city's waters. A handsome industrial structure, the neo-classical Grit Chamber was designed in 1933 by the firm of McKim. Mead, and White and was built in 1936-37 by the New York City Department of Sanitation. Its exterior design makes the Grit Chamber one of the city's most unusual industrial structures.
East River Plant in Port Morris
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: One of the most common complaints amongst residents of #PortMorris is about the chemicals that come off from the numerous power plants on the coast of Port Morris, as well as across the river. They not only dislike the look and smell of the power plants, but worry about the health consequences of the number of power plants in such a confined area.
Rundown Kosher Cafe
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: Although much of #ClintonHill in Brooklyn is well developed, and well preserved for its original architecture, there are some run down areas of Clinton Hill. This Kosher Deli on Hall Street is just one example of a neglected building in a not so nice section of the Clinton Hill district of Brooklyn.
West Side Avenue and Danforth Intersection
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: Here is the intersection of West Side Avenue and Danforth Avenue. This is where the West Side section of Jersey City stops and the Greenville section of Jersey City starts. This area of Jersey City is known to be slightly more dangerous than other areas of the West Side section.
