Crime in Port Morris
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: Violent crime is still a problem in #PortMorris despite crime declines versus their peaks during the heroin and crack epidemics. Massive low income public housing developments line the north side of the Major Deegan Expressway. The Mott Haven area to the west is notorious for its drug trade and violent crime. Port Morris is very industrial and desolate. The area is patrolled by the 40th Precinct located at 257 Alexander Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.

Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: The #PortMorris area is dominated by factory and warehouse buildings constructed in the mid-to-late 19th century, convenient to the railroad yards, of which the Oak Point Yard is the main survivor. Notable early businesses were the R. Hoe Co., as well as Cutler & Hammer Tool Works, and Mothers Friend Shirt Waist factory (1888) at Willow Ave. between E. 135th & E. 136th Sts.
St. James Hotel
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: A lengthy brick building on the east side of Port Richmond Avenue between Richmond Terrace and Church Street was built in 1874 for Charles Griffith, a boot and shoe dealer, and is known as the Griffith Block. Directly abutting it on Richmond Terrace until 1945 was the St. James Hotel, known to be the last home of Aaron Burr, the third Vice President. The building was built in #PortMorris, New York.
National September 11 Memorial & Museum
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: Building the National September 11 Memorial was one of international significance, especially since Port Morris had worked on the original Twin Towers. The National September 11 Memorial in #PortMorris installed both of the 200 ft. north and south fountains, which have honed Jet Mist Granite, from A. Lacroix Granit in Canada, installed on the interior walls. Each piece weighs approximately 300 pounds and there were 3,500 pieces (63,000 sq. ft.) of this granite used.
Bronx Grit Chamber
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: The Bronx Grit Chamber, located in #PortMorris is a primary component of the Ward's Island Sewage Treatment Works, New York City's first major project to alleviate the pollution of the city's waters. A handsome industrial structure, the neo-classical Grit Chamber was designed in 1933 by the firm of McKim. Mead, and White and was built in 1936-37 by the New York City Department of Sanitation. Its exterior design makes the Grit Chamber one of the city's most unusual industrial structures.
Verde Flowers
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: Verde Flowers is one of the most popular florists in the Bronx, particularly #PortMorris, due to their high attention to detail and high drive to satisfy their customers. Located on Alexander Avenue, right off the Major Deegan Expressway, people from Manhattan have even been known to make the drive up to Port Morris for Verde's custom flowers.
Port Morris Fire Station
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: The fire department located at 138th street in #PortMorris New York represents one of the finest fire departments in the country- the FDNY. This station, along with all the other New York fire departments, were many of the first responders during the September 11th World Trade Center attacks. Many of the firefighters from this station lost their lives that day trying to save others.
East River Plant in Port Morris
Kathleen Patricia Odenthal: One of the most common complaints amongst residents of #PortMorris is about the chemicals that come off from the numerous power plants on the coast of Port Morris, as well as across the river. They not only dislike the look and smell of the power plants, but worry about the health consequences of the number of power plants in such a confined area.
