ValloCycle BikeShare Parnell Library
Treasure Ingels: The ValloCycle BikeShare Station at Parnell Memorial Library simplifies healthy travel for families and others. We are proud to have the first city-wide bike sharing program in the state of Alabama! ValloCycle membership includes unlimited 7-day bicycle rentals and renewals from a stockpile of over fifty bikes of all makes, models, and sizes. Annual membership fees amount to roughly $2 a month for adults (at $25 per year), and $1 a month for children (at $10 per year). Registration forms can be found at any of our three in-town rental locations (UM Carmichael Library, City Parnell Library, and City Police Department) and must be turned into City Hall prior to rental. Alternately, membership can be gained by committing to 25 volunteer service hours with any city, university, community, religious, or other charitable organization within Montevallo, with rental privileges granted upon the completion of the first ten hours. The Blue Heron Edible Forest Garden
Treasure Ingels: Located on the Montevallo Parks Trail, The Blue Heron Edible Forest Garden is a tiny paradise in development. Nut bearers, fruit bearers, berry vines, and various other edible and beautiful perennials converge to feed and house wildlife. Walkers along the trail are welcome to pick from this garden as production increases. Managed by Central Alabama Permaculture Enthusiasts, this garden represents an opportunity for every visitor to discover the earth steward within him/herself.
McKibbon House, Bed And Breakfast
Treasure Ingels: The McKibbon House, a stately and finely appointed Queen Anne, is among one the favorite travel destinations in the area. Visitors from around the globe or just around the state come to the McKibbon House for excellent care and accommodations. Montevallo Recycling Center
Treasure Ingels: City of Montevallo Recycling Center grows truly from a community effort to live better, to steward more consciously, and to eliminate waste even as Montevallo collects funds to improve the lives of her people. Partners in this effort include University of Montevallo, Montevallo Public Schools (elementary, middle, and high), Alabama Power Company, Waste Pro, Lafarge, and the Chamber of Commerce. In keeping with the community spirit showcased here, UM students under the tutelage and guidance of Collin Williams, graphic arts professor, designed and created this mural and can sculpture to celebrate the beauty of sustainability.
Montevallo's Seed To Table
Treasure Ingels: Opening in 2010, Montevallo's Seed to Table provides excellent gardening space to this charming Southern community. Plots are tended according to organic principles to ensure the healthiest food for increasingly healthy bodies. Surplus is donated to organizations such as Shelby Emergency Assistance, and educational plots focus on lessons for University Baptist Church Preschool classes. Food from such plots supplement the School's kitchen. Among other offerings are community work days for conversation and spirit, rain barrels and compost bins, plants for the plots, and educational workshops. In May, 2012, Alabama's First International Permaculture Day was hosted on the Seed to Table grounds by Central Alabama Permaculture Enthusiasts (CAPE).
Organic Community Garden, University of Montevallo
Treasure Ingels: Founded on Earth Day, 2009, the UM Organic Community Garden originally began across the creek just through the little patch of woods to the back but was moved as flooding proved to be a problem. Students, faculty, and community members may rent plots and help tend grounds. The garden is visible from the Montevallo Parks Trail.
